I Became a Magician By Accident
Is it possible for a man to recover from a near death head trauma injury and later discover he may hold the keys to unlock the mysteries of magic?
Daston never remembered the exact moment the steel beam struck him—only the echo afterward. A white flash, a burst of heat, and then the sound of his own name being shouted from somewhere far away, as though his body had slipped into a different room than his mind. The doctors called it a miracle that he survived the industrial accident at all. But Daston knew that whatever woke up inside him that day was something more than a miracle.
The visions began as flickers.
A cup tipping over before it moved. A coworker walking into the breakroom seconds after he saw her do it. Tiny moments, insignificant on their own, but too precise to ignore. Soon the flickers became scenes—dreams of events that hadn’t yet happened, vivid as memories yet unwitnessed. Sometimes they were harmless, odd curiosities. Other times, they were warnings that left him breathless in the dark.
He told no one.
The last thing he wanted was to be labeled damaged, unstable… a freak. The scars on both sides of his neck along with his partial facial paralysis already drew enough questions. The idea that his mind might have changed along with his skull terrified him.
But fear has a strange way of bending when pushed.
One night, while watching a street magician on a cramped corner of the city market, Daston felt something shift. The performer, surrounded by laughter and disbelief, was doing the unbelievable—and people loved him for it. He wasn’t feared. He wasn’t questioned. He was celebrated for bending reality, for making the impossible look effortless.
And Daston felt a quiet spark in his chest.
If people were willing to applaud illusions, maybe they’d never need to know which of his feats were illusions at all.
So he practiced. Sleight of hand, misdirection, palming coins, controlling cards. He spent months mastering the techniques of ordinary magicians while quietly learning how to integrate the extraordinary insights that arrived in his dreams. A dropped card before it happened. A perfectly predicted choice in a spectator’s hands. A revelation delivered with the confidence of someone who had already witnessed the outcome.
He learned to hide his gift in plain sight.
Onstage, he wasn’t the scarred man from the accident. He wasn’t the anxious survivor who woke sweating from visions of tomorrow. He was Daston the Mystic, a performer cloaked in velvet shadows and bright possibilities. People cheered his “tricks,” never realizing that some were rooted in futures he had seen moments, hours, or days before.
Every performance brought him a little closer to something he hadn’t felt in years: acceptance. Every applause cleaned a layer of fear from his heart. And every time someone asked, “How did you do that?”, he would smile, bow deeply, and say:
“A magician never reveals his secrets.”
Only Daston knew that some secrets were too strange—even for magic.
"I was involved in an industrial accident on my 37th birthday. On that particular birthday I received a few gifts. One was the gift of extended life. I have decided to share my gift by entertaining as a magician.
